Does Multi-Tasking Really Work?

mother-multi-tasking.jpg

Multi-tasking. We all do it. Some of us better than others. Personally, I am very skilled at driving, talking on my Bluetooth and drinking my coffee all at the same time. Some would say it is a prized skill in today’s world, but recent studies have shown that doing more than one task at a time actually slows down the speed at which each task could be done on its own.

When you’re doing more than one task, your brain is in fact switching back and forth, doing each task in sequence. When you have to refocus your attention, you are aren’t doing either task efficiently. In fact, multi-tasking wastes time as it takes the brain minutes to refocus on the task at hand. A task that only takes a few minutes can take an hour or more to complete.

So try “chunking” your time instead. Break up your day into larger chunks instead of reacting to everything as it comes. Designate specific tasks for specific time periods-don’t allow interruptions-and you will boost your productivity and focus! I guess that means I need to drink my coffee before getting in the car!
